2010 was another successful year of reading! I read a good spattering of genres, including fiction, history, and instructional. I learned a ton, and hopefully a lot of it will make its way into my writing; I know the history books will. And that’s why writers need to read: to get ideas, to learn about how people relate to each other, and to accustom ourselves to good writing. (A case can also be made for reading the occasional bad book as well.)
I thought I’d share the list with you—not in order to say how great I am, but to inspire you to read more and give you some book ideas. I have a full-time job and life just like anyone else, but you can find time to read if you try.

Free reading tip: You might ask, “How the heck do you know exactly what you read?” At the beginning of the year I simply grab an index card and use it as a bookmark. I write down the date I start a book and the date I finish it. I’m looking forward to looking back after several years of reading and seeing a detailed list of all that I have read.
I’ll post my recommendations out of this list in the next couple of days, so stay tuned. In the meantime, here’s to reading!
